Shea butter is a vegetable fat that is extracted from the nuts of the African shea tree—Vitellaria paradoxa—and owing to its skin-softening and moisturising properties is an often-used ingredient in handmade soaps.Â
Properties
Shea butter is rich in fatty acids, particularly  oleic acid and stearic acid—both of which have powerful skin moisturising actions.
It is rich in vitamins A, E and F, and is renowned for its emollient, moisturising, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
In soap products
Shea butter is one of our favourite soap ingredients. It is a superb moisturiser that won't clog the pores and provides a natural defence against UV radiation. Additionally, it is suitable for sensitive skin types and is resistant to eczema and dermatitis.
