Mandarin essential oil is extracted from the peel of the mandarin orange fruit—Citrus reticulata—and is characterised by its very sweet citrus aroma, similar to sweet orange but more intense. Like its citrus relatives lemon, lime, bergamot, sweet orange and grapefruit, it offers a range of potential benefits to your skin and general health.
Properties
As it is derived from citrus, oil of mandarin is very high in limonene, and also contains alpha-terpinene. Limonene has confirmed anti-stress, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Terpenine has known anti-microbial and antioxidant properties. Additional properties may include benefits to the immune system, digestion, nervous system, and circulation, as well as reduction in nausea.
Of all the citrus essential oils, mandarin is the least likely to cause phototoxicity.Â
