Grapefruit essential oil is extracted by cold pressing the peel of the grapefruit—Citrus × paradisi—and is commonly used in aromatherapy and bath products such as soap or bath bombs. Its citrus aroma is bright and uplifting, and offers a range of potential benefits for both skincare and mental health.Â
Properties
Grapefruit oil is a powerful cleanser. There is some evidence to suggest that it has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties which may prove useful in fighting yeast infections of Candida albicans, as well as acne. It also has a limonene content that may assist with lowering blood pressure.
How to use grapefruit oil
Grapefruit essential oil can be applied topically, diffused in vapour, and in soap.
 Steam inhalation
Add one or two drops of grapefruit essential oil to a diffuser to create a sense of calming focus. For added motivation, blend with an energising essential oil such as rosemary.Â
For a more uplifting experience, try blending with juniper berry or sweet orange essential oils.
Topical application
Create a soothing and relaxing massage oil by adding one or two drops to a carrier oil. For a more intoxicating massage oil, also add a drop of frankincense oil.
In soap
Grapefruit oil's powerful antibacterial properties alongside its delectably sweet citrus notes make it a revered ingredient in handmade soaps and bath bombs. Soaps containing grapefruit oil are recommended for clogged pores and acne-prone skin.
