Collection: Frankincense Oil

What is Frankincense Oil?

Frankincense oil is an essential oil that has been steam-distilled from frankincense, an aromatic resin that is obtained from the Boswellia sacra tree. It is commonly used in aromatherapy and in handmade soap. The resin itself has been used as an incense for 6,000 years, first in the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, and later introduced to Western Europe during the Middle Ages. It is commonly used in church services, particularly at Christmas time.

Both the resin and the oil have a uniquely earthy scent, suggestive of aromatic musty pine with spice and citrus notes. The oil smells slightly sweeter than the resin.

Properties

Frankincense oil is high in sesquiterpenols, sesquiterpenes, monoterpenes, ketones, and monoterpenoles, with known anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, expectorant, astringent, and antioxidant properties. Advocates have testified to its efficacy in treating anxiety, treating asthma, stimulating the immune system,  healing cuts, improving digestion and smoothing wrinkles. There is ongoing research into frankincense oil's ability to fight certain cancers.
