Collection: Chamomile Essential Oil

WHAT IS Chamomile ESSENTIAL OIL?

Chamomile essential oil is steam-distilled from the flowers of the chamomile plant—Chamaemelum nobile—and is characterised by a sweet, herbaceous aroma with notes of apple and straw.

Chamomile oil has been used in folk remedies and alternative medicine for centuries to treat a broad array of ailments, but it is most famous for its use as a sleep remedy.

In aromatherapy, two types of chamomile essential oil are used: Roman chamomile oil and German chamomile oil. Both may be used to improve sleep, but the German variety is favoured in the treatment of skin irritations.

Properties

Chamomile essential oil contains a number of sesquiterpenes, terpene lactones (including the aromatic chamazulene), and polyphenols.

These provide a number of combined properties in Roman and German chamomile oils, which include analgesic, anti-spasmodic, antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, antiphlogistic, bactericidal, carminative, cholagogue, emmenagogue, hepatic, sedative, digestive, stomachic, vermifuge,  and vulnerary.
