A quick dip into bathing history

Whether we take a quick shower or a long indulgent soak, the primary purpose of bathing is to clean our skin.  In ancient times communal bath houses were used by communities as a place to bathe, relax and socialise. Evidence of elaborate bath houses have been excavated from archaeological sites in ancient Greece and Rome. Bathing was also a form of religious ritual. As the cultures of society changed throughout the different empires and eras bathing practices changed as well. During the dark ages the bath houses and aqueducts were not maintained and thus crumbled. Hygiene suffered and illness increased. It wasn’t until the late 1800s that bathing and hygiene was considered necessary to help prevent the spread of disease. Fast forward to modern times, bathing is not only the key to good hygiene but it is also a great way to relax.

A great way to de-stress and promote sleep

Most of us lead busy lives, and we usually don't look after ourselves enough. Some of us have children we need to get ready for school, supervise homework and take to their extracurricular activities. Some of us have infants and toddlers as well that cause nocturnal disruptions which in turn leads to lack of sleep. Some of us have stressful work roles and long commutes. We are so good at putting the needs of everyone else above our own.

When we were children, chances are we fought bath time, both getting in and getting out! But as we get older and busier we realise there is nothing quite as relaxing as coming home after a busy day of feeling rushed and stressed, running a warm bath, lighting some candles, burning some essential oils, turning on some relaxing music and dropping a soothing bath bomb in the water. We watch mesmerised as it fizzes away, releasing its goodness into the water.  As we relax our skin absorbs the goodness of the oils and the essential oil aromas surround us to help calm spirit and mind. A long soak in a bath is often the key to a good night’s sleep.

How do we make our bath bombs?

The Soap Bar bath bombs are made by hand with sodium bicarbonate and citric acid, which together soften the water, condition the skin and provide the fizzy fun. We also add generous amounts of apricot kernel oil and cocoa butter. Apricot kernel oil is a light oil obtained from the seeds of apricots it is high in Vitamins A and E, both essential for healthy skin. It deeply penetrates the skin leaving it soft and supple. Cocoa butter is rich in fatty acids which helps to repair and maintain the skin's protective barrier enabling it to retain moisture and suppleness. These two ingredients provide the moisture and nourishment our skin needs. The Soap Bar bath bombs also contain milk powder; Cleopatra is attributed to the skin benefits of bathing in milk. The lactic acid in milk is a gentle exfoliant helping to restore suppleness to our skin.

Our scents are careful blends of pure essential oils, each one designed for a different purpose, be it energising or soothing, uplifting or calming. The aroma is released into the bath for us to both breathe and absorb through our skin.
