Neroli essential oil is produced via steam distillation from the blossom of the bitter orange tree—Citrus aurantium—and is notable for its rich, floral scent with citrus overtones. Neroli has the most potent aroma of all citrus oils. It is renowned for its ability to soothe the nerves, and you'll find it blends well with other citrus essential oils.
As a member of the citrus family, neroli essential oil is rich in aromatic terpenes, such as linalool, limonene, farnesol, geraniol and citral.
It is these terpenes which give the oil its antibiotic, antiseptic, anti-depressant, bactericidal, aphrodisiac, deodorising, calming, sedative and fungicidal properties.
How to use neroli essential oil
Oil of neroli can be applied topically, in vapour, and in soap products.
In contrast with other citrus oils, neroli is safe for sensitive skin, and like mandarin oil, it is not phototoxic. Applied topically, neroli has a range of skin benefits—mix with water or a carrier oil and apply to irritated or inflamed areas, as well as wrinkles, acne and age spots.
To relieve digestive problems or to improve digestion, blend 3-4 drops with a carrier oil (such as a blended massage oil), and massage into the lower abdomen.
Add a few drops to your bathwater to relieve PMT symptoms.
Directly inhaling neroli vapour has been known to alleviate panic attacks and increase libido.
Adding a few drops to your diffuser can create a sense of wellbeing in your living space, as well as relieve insomnia, headaches, and regulate blood pressure.
As a soap ingredient
Neroli's gorgeous citrus floral scent doesn't fade easily, and including it in your bathing routine will help to regenerate skin cells, fight wrinkles and acne, and prove beneficial to both oily and dry skin.
Essential Oils are highly concentrated and must be used with care. Use with care in pregnancy—if in doubt consult with medical professional.
